This project is a world first, being delivered across five phases our capital city where 212,000 people live.
We’re on the way to making Wellington the world’s first predator free capital city, a place where our native species and communities thrive. As we remove rats, possums, stoats and weasels, we’re seeing our bird, lizard and insect populations bounce back immediately. Our goal is to do this across all of Wellington and the surrounding area, a total area of 30,000 hectares – and we’re well on the way!
Phase 1, Miramar Peninsula, has been predator free since late 2023, and we’ll complete Phase 2 ‘Island Bay to CBD’ this year. This means more land, more residents, more traps and more complexity. We know how to do it now – we just need funding support to finish the job.
