Return on investment (2025)

Understanding the impact of our work

How is our project changing the city? We asked Oberon Minskip from Titania Consulting to investigate. They measured the return on investment (ROI) to understand how money invested in our work resulted in social, economic and environmental gains.

Oberon’s research found an ROI on Miramar of $1.29 per dollar invested. Across the first year of our Phase 2 work, this value expanded to $2.49. We expect these values to grow as our project develops and the returns compound.

What did the study involve?

Oberon focused on our project’s biggest impacts (listed below) and used figures from Treasury and their CBAx tool. CBAx provides values to help projects like ours quantify our impacts. The modelling used conservative figures, meaning we chose the lowest reasonable estimates. This gives us a value that doesn’t overstate our impact and that we can defend.

This work did not cover every impact and, aside from increases in native birds, doesn’t include benefits to our environment. It’s great to see this positive return on investment. While there are good outcomes for those who volunteer with the project, we’re proud that our work has always promoted equitable outcomes.

As our project grows to cover more of the city and its residents, these ROIs will grow over time. For example, Phase 2 covers more people who benefit from our work, giving a larger return figure.

When and where were the impacts measured?

The $1.29 ROI was for Phase 1 of our project, the Miramar Peninsula. It covered 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.

Phase 2’s returns of $2.49 measured our active areas from the Wellington CBD to Ōwhiro Bay from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024.

Why did we do this?

While bird counts can show the impact of our work, money talks. Being able to quantify our project’s financial impacts helps us tell our story. Some funders and supporters also like to understand the ways their support helps.

What outcomes were measured?

These are the measured outcomes for Phase 1, Miramar Peninsula, from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
